Patient compliance with prescribed therapy is fundamental to the successful medical management of the vast majority of diagnosed disorders. Studies estimate that more than 50% of patients do not take their medications as prescribed1, costing the pharmaceutical industry an estimated U.S. $30 billion annually from prescriptions that are not filled or refilled2.
Patients cite many reasons for noncompliance, including inconvenience, unpleasant taste, and difficulty in administration. While oral dosage forms remain the preferred mode of administration, pediatric and geriatric patients are particularly susceptible to problems associated with swallowing tablets or capsules.
