Sustained Release
The plasma concentrations for certain drugs need to be maintained within precise therapeutic ranges, as drug substances may be alternatively ineffective or hazardous outside the lower and upper limits of these ranges.
|
This is difficult to achieve with immediate release formulations.
Drugs with short plasma half-lives are often eliminated rapidly from the body. To provide a therapeutic benefit, frequent dosing of immediate release formulations is often required. Frequent dosing (two, three or four times a day) can result in safety and compliance issues, as doses may be either inadvertently skipped or taken too frequently. Addtionally, frequent dosing regimens are inconvenient and unpopular with patients.
In order to overcome these problems, Eurand’s CDR technologies can be utilized to sustain a drug's release at a specific rate over a defined period of time, such that required drug plasma concentration is maintained within a targeted range. This type of drug release profile is generally ideal in that it ensures therapeutic effect while minimizing any side effects associated with high plasma drug levels. A reduction in dosing frequency improves compliance and overall treatment effectiveness, thus reducing health-care costs.

Benefits of a Sustained Release Profile Include:
- Maintenance of plasma drug levels within a defined therapeutic range
- Reduction in the number of doses taken by a patient
- Enhanced drug safety profiles
- Improved patient compliance
